Weekend Inbox, Part Deux

About a month ago we featured a blog post about the recent release by Dead Confederate, Wrecking Ball. Our CD arrived earlier in the week and as I hoped, it's terrific. Featuring an awesome haunting, no frills sound, Dead Confederate should realize considerable success with this realese, as there's not a bad track on it. Highly recommended; if you buy 5 CD's this year, make sure this is one of them.

From is a wonderpop band solely consisting of its founder, Roni Brunn. Conceived as a studio project, it was named From as a concise expression of rootlessness and a four-letter F-word at that. With its hedonistic, self-assured swagger, From would be a bad ass punk band – if it weren’t cute. It playfully flirts with sex, drugs, and rock n roll but ultimately ends up with hope. The lyrics recall the surrealism in both David Lynch and Walt Disney films. The melodies race with the Buzzcocks’ urgency while balancing on the crisp, catchy pop traditions of Lennon-McCartney.

Roni's got a new album on the way, Fair Isle. Happy and catchy orchestral sounds that are reminiscent of the Long Blondes(to me, anyway). Roni grew up in Tel Aviv, Israel, attended high school in Beverly Hills, and graduated Harvard University with a major in economics; I can't say I've ever known anyone else that can say that. She is a self-taught musician who writes, performs, and produces all the tracks for From. She's got an addictive sound, I think you'll like this!

One of the best-kept secrets in the Cleveland band-scene is Mystery of Two, a band with a not-quite new wave or punk sound but a great experitmental pop twist to their music. I'm listening to Strange Town, and the droning guitars are mesmerizing. Both tracks shared are on the bands' digital seven-inch. Mystery of Two is on the Exit Stencil label, the brand that bought you a couple of our favorites, The Dreadful Yawns and Spanish Prisoners.

The Piano Creeps will release Future Blues (for me and you) next month, a collaboration of Billy Coté, Mary Lorson and Kathy Ziegler. Coté and Lorson were the songwriter and lead singer of 90's alt-pop band Madder Rose. That band made four albums, three of which were really good, and toured the world, enjoying critical approval if not staggering sales. After Madder Rose, Coté created the nihilist slack-hop project Jazz Cannon with vocalist Don Greene while Lorson explored her inner auteur on three Saint Low discs with UK label Cooking Vinyl. The pair have also joined forces to create several original film scores. Their songs have been placed in numerous films and television shows, including the last season of "The Sopranos," "Alias," "Felicity," "Skins" (UK) and others too forgettable to mention. The album is out October 14th.

Following up an earlier post, the release date for Tracy Shedd's Cigarettes & Smoke Machines is this Tuesday(the 23rd). Her music is smart, pointed pop and is a direct and economic assertion backed by sharp musicianship and just the right amount of reverb. Cigarettes & Smoke Machines features guest appearances by John Girgus, Brian Espinosa, Richard Dudley, James Tritten, Craig Schumacher and Joey Burns and is produced by Craig Schumacher.
