Cherry Poppin' Daddies: Susquehanna
If you find yourself driving somewhere near Eugene, Oregon, and a loud musical commotion commands your attention, you are likely hearing Cherry Poppin' Daddies. After almost 20 years of making their unique big band swing/eclectic mix music, there's certainly no shortage of energy in the bands' latest release, Susquehanna. Drawing comparisons to Faith No More and Fishbone among others, CPD's ambitious instrumentals feature trumpets, flamenco guitars and percussion played by real dancing feet only add to the ruckus and gassy make-up of their music. Each track seems to present itself as a three or four minute chapter in a novel that's in a big-but controlled-hurry. That doesn't detract from the quality of the music however; the entire album is just a damn good time to listen to. Steve Perry, a University of Oregon chemistry major (that explains a lot!) is the primary catalyst behind CPD; he's recruited just the right musicians to make the music sound like something many bands have tried to emulate, but just never quite "got right". Excellent...highly recommended.

Not bad, has that BIG BAND type sound to their music.

"Big band"? The two MP3s that I heard here were ska punk and 70s-ish pop-rock....I don't see any swing influence, thank god. Still, great stuff.
