Like A Big Sandwich, You've Got To Start Biting Somewhere
Time-or lack of it-can be such a ratty commodity. As I've mentioned a couple times here recently, my workload has been a real bear and the minimal amount of posts the past couple months pretty much reflects that. Seems each time I feel I'll have a decent amount of time to populate the post-count, something else crops up and poor ol' Local Vertical gets pushed aside. But hope springs eternal, or at least optimistic, that I can get some of the mole-hill of music up to share with you over the weekend as the cellphone will remain turned off and work has promised they'll call another fire department if something comes up. Some of this fantastic music has been sitting on my desk since early January, and I best hurry up and get something done with it, else it might end up being classified as a retrospective instead of new music. Thanks for sticking with me, now on with the festivities.

NYC's rockous Reckless Sons have released their latest EP, Don't You Dare, late last year and it stopped Gotham dead in its tracks. Packing the local clubs for years, Reckless Sons feature a monster live show that went overseas, as the band recently completed a month-long tour of Britain. The band is rewriting what a garage band is all about; Don't You Dare is evidence of that.

Founded in 2000, Helsinki based Pooma is one of the best kept secrets of Finnish music. Their mesmerizing mixture of shoegaze-pop, electronica and majestic strings has evoked comparisons to the likes of Sigur Rós and Múm and Mew. But as they come from Finland they take the Scandinavian melancholy a step further. Their debut album, released in Europe in 2007, was produced and partly mixed by Gunnar Örn Tynes of the icelandic band Múm, and released in Finland last year. I'm not the biggest shoegaze fan in the world, but this is exceptionally beautiful music and extremely well done. The track All Worked Out is incredible.
