New York indie rockers Telling On Trixie's brand new release, Ugly, Broke & Sober is as much a confirmation as it is musical excellence. Derek Nicoletto's latest body of work is nothing short of stunning, from the incredible guitars of Tommy Kessler on Mad About You to Marco Colasacco's precise piano on Eden (Take A Bite) to Nicoletto's passionate and hopeful vocals on the title track, Telling on Trixie has firmly established themselves as a band whose songs you need to hear because of the messages their music brings, messages of hope, despair, recovery and moving on. Messages of passion, faith and friendship. But most of all, a message that you only need to believe in yourself to make things happen. The message is as overpowering as the music, and that's a testament to Nicoletto, Kessler, Colasacco, drummers Andrew Frawley and Charlie Zeleny, bassists Nicholas D'Amato, Tom Shad, Matt Aronoff and Tom Welsch, pianist John Deley and guitarist Brad Small. They are much more than just a group of musicians; they are a group of friends with the same beliefs and motivations. And it's all in their music for you to hear.Telling on Trixie was one of the first bands we heard from in the earlier days of this blog and it's been a real pleasure to be a small part of their success. Their Band With A Plan campaign allowed them to produce Ugly, Broke & Sober without having any distractions from corporate wrangling, another testament to the exploding fan base the band is realizing as a result. Derek Nicoletto only has one small problem to face now: as good as this album is, how in the hell will he top this? Simply excellent...highly recommended. If you only buy a couple CD's this year, make sure this is one of them.
Derek, two personal notes: the liner note inclusion was cool as hell...thank you, and the consensus among the launch team is Steps To The Throne is just awesome. I'll get some of those cheap bastards to buy CD's!
