I recently started taking half-days off on Fridays as I usually have my weekly tasks done by then. It felt a little odd, as I guess I'm the poster child for a workaholic and just flat never miss any work. I believe I've had 2 or 3 non-weekend or holiday days off the past 8 or 9 years, so I decided to back down a bit and take a little breather from the work week. I also rarely watch television and cannot remember the last time I watched anything on daytime TV. So I peeked at the tube when I got home today and I see why I don't miss it. I had no idea so many "judges" had TV shows, but I guess some people consider someone mediating the stolen pair of shoes from Misty's closet to be must-see TV. And the channels that didn't have Judge Manny, Judge Moe or Judge Jack on had either Jack LaLaine squeezing some fruit into a turbo-charged blender, or some guy who colors his beard with spray paint and screams a lot wanting people to by his stain remover, or reruns of every sixties sitcom ever made. The Dirty Jobs show is pretty cool, as is anything on History Channel and some independent station on our cable provider has an hour of the Three Stooges, so I guess there's some hope. Meh, maybe I'll go back to work...• • • •
The group is Headless Heroes; the simple, beautiful voice belongs to Alela Diane. The band's new release, The Silence of Love, is out on May 19th. The songs are all bittersweet and of love and loss, but also fresh and inspiring interpretations ranging from from Daniel Johnston, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds back to Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhacs and The Gentle Soul. Alela's unearthly voice calls you; give it a listen and answer back. This may well be a sleeper release for 2009; highly recommended.mp3:
