New Music: Sara Watkins (self-titled)
Sara Watkins' self-titled solo debut release will be out on April 7th. You might recognize her name from her almost-two decades of singing, songwriting and fiddle-playing with Nickel Creek. She's long had a desire to go solo with a project and has completed the task in a wonderfully skillful manner, drawing from an impressive list of musicians including Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench and Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas, and production by former Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. You can hear so many influences in her music: bluegrass, alt-country, folk. But what makes her music so special is that it's simply Sara singing Sara's way. No pretense, totally straightforward lyrics, extremely compelling and some of the best fiddles and ukuleles you'll ever hear. A couple friends are going to her show up in Jacksonville at the Florida Theatre as part of the Old Crow Medicine Show, and it should be a great night of American root music that I'll hate not being able to attend. Have some friends over, sit out on the porch and just let Sara's voice be the tonic that will cure all that might ail you musically. Excellent, highly recommended. Whether it's your genre or not.
