Hybrid Weekend Inbox

Not blessed with too much time this weekend between some plans for today and Tuesday's launch of Discovery, so we'll just post up some music and see what sticks with everyone. Planning on being able to post again towards the end of next week as hopefully the launch will go off as scheduled and I can enjoy a long holiday weekend. Hope to see you then!

As I've mentioned a couple of times, Genna Giacobassi of Fiction Like Candy has been doing a summer-long series of covers suggested by readers. We're flattered that she recorded our suggestion of Sheena Easton's 1981 song "You Could Have Been With Me". Only Genna can take a beautiful song and make it sound even better, as she sure did with this one.

NY's Paper The Operator has a free download of Mount Bounty available on their MySpace page. It's 25 tracks of demos, studio recordings, covers, and unreleased tracks recorded between 2000 and 2005, and there are some great examples of the distinctive songwriting of Jon Sebastian in it.

Toronto hard rockers Danko Jones will have the US release of their new album, Never Too Loud, on September 8th. A fixture on the European festival circuit, the three-piece band will begin an American tour in October with British punk icons The Damned, likely resulting in some permanent hearing loss for those in attendance.

Sister Hazel's 7th and newest studio album, Release, has been...um, released. Their first new work in almost three years, Sister Hazel has enjoyed over 2 million albums sold and as bands usually do in support of a new album, they are touring. They also co-founded a floating music festival,The Rock Boat, now in its tenth year. Now I know this blog has been around a while: SH's album Absolutely was one of the first we posted about, and it was released in 2006.

Shilpa Ray and Her Happy Hookers released their debut album, A Fish Hook An Open Eye, last month and it showcases the band's unique combination of blues, sleazy jazz, and punk pop rock. The album was gunned in just 8 days, but there's no sacrifice in depth or emotions in the music. It's actually a pretty cool sound that you'll get to liking more with each play.

Back from a music trip to Spain, friend Charlie Ashcroft has episode 16 of his Low Slung podcast ready for you on his MySpace page. The man flat can find some music, wind it together and produce a pod that you'll enjoy all 26:24 of. This month's podder includes music from Tiny Tigers, Cat Mouse Cat and Kicaberry among others. I think I've found a couple bands through his podcast whose music I liked enough to go out and buy CD's. Now if I can just get him to introduce me to Poppy...

Finally, Dave from Apteka has sent over another single for us to share. One of our favorite psychedelic rock bands, Apteka features some of the most powerful and pulsing guitars around. If you aren't too familiar with this band, they are from Chicago and their music is better every time they produce and release something. We first wrote about them back in May, and always look forward to new music from them.
